Skilled in his Work!

It’s June 22 so let’s look for wisdom for men from chapter 22 of Proverbs. The very last verse catches my attention, verse 29: “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before obscure men.”

This passage does not say that this man is talented. It does not state that he is gifted. It points out that he is ‘skilled in his work‘. People are graced with gifts and talents but a skill is something that is honed and developed over time. This stands in contrast to the generalist. The man with a wide range of experience but with no real expertise may seem to be a candidate for obscurity.
