The Wound of Betrayal

Whether you are a teenager or a senior citizen, there are few wounds as painful as a close friend’s betrayal.

Verse 13: “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.”

We are made in God’s Image, so we each long for relationships and meaningful community with a few close friends. These are the people we share ‘confidential’ information with. We have ‘confidence’ in these few chosen friends that they will carefully guard what we share with them and hold it in ‘confidence’

Most agree that gossip is bad but this proverb reminds us that some gossip is outright betrayal.

What does it mean to betray? – to reveal, often unintentionally; to disclose in violation of confidence.

May God give us grace and self control to be intentional and to carefully guard what others share with us in confidence.
