Proverbs 4 – Generational Discipleship

Over and over and over in Proverbs, Solomon pleads with his sons to listen and to pay attention. – verse 1:

“Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction; pay attention and gain understanding.”

He was once young like they are and he remembers how his father taught him – verse 4:

“He taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live.”

This is the Design of Almighty God; one generation instructs the next generation.

  1. Fathers instruct
  2. Sons pay attention
  3. Fathers pass on wisdom
  4. Sons gain understanding

Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Again, the Design of God in Psalm 78:

’He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our ancestors

to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born,

and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God

and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

Dads! Let’s step into this opportunity and not sidestep our God given responsibility!
