June 8 – Proverbs 8

When is it Good to Hate?

It’s June 8, so why not read chapter 8 in Proverbs today; then focus in on one verse.

Looking at verse 13, I am wondering; “When is it good to hate?” Although it is never good to hate people, created in the image of God, there are some things that we are called to hate as a result of fearing the Lord. Here’s verse 13: “To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech.”

What does it mean for me to fear God? What does it look like in 2020 to have a deep and abiding reverence for Him and His ways? It may not be as nebulous as I have made it out to be. I need to:

1. Hate evil.

2. Hate pride.

3. Hate arrogance

4. Hate evil behavior

5. Hate perverse speech

How does hate differ from disapproval? What does it look like for a man to hate something? Hate is defined as extreme dislike or disgust; feel intense or passionate dislike for something. So, I start with myself and my actions. Am I disgusted with any hint of pride or arrogance? Am I cautious and intentional about the words of my mouth and the thoughts of my heart?

Is it time for me to hate?  What other instruction does God have for me?  Consider reading the rest of chapter 8 in Proverbs today for wisdom for men.
