Stephen Michael Newby is a native of Detroit, MI. He received his BA in vocal music education and flute performance from Madonna College in Livonia, MI. His MM in jazz composition and arranging was earned from the University of Massachusetts. He is a worship leader, vocalist, songwriter, composer, and publisher of many different musical styles and traditions, Dr. Newby serves as Associate Professor of Music, and director of the Gospel Choir at Seattle Pacific University. He has performed gospel music in 40 states and in Africa, Asia, Canada, and the Middle East. He also serves as Pastor of Worship Arts at Antioch Bible Church in Kirkland, Washington. He is married to Stephanie for twenty-three years and they have one son, Silas Michael Newby. Stephen‘s recordings can be found on Maranatha Music, Integrity and Newby’s Witness Music labels. He has written a book entitled Worship Outside the Music Box published by Redemption Press this Spring 2015 and is commissioned yearly, writing chamber music works fusing gospel, jazz, and western musical sensibilities.
He is a Tenured Professor of Music and Director of The Center for Worship and Head of Composition at Seattle Pacific University. Newby has served as a Worship Leader/Recording Artist for Maranatha! Music, Integrity Music, Promise Keepers, and Family Life Ministries. He has released other recordings such “Delight to Do God’s Will” on Maranatha, “Gospel Songs for Baritone and String Orchestra” on Albany Records and “I Still Do” with Integrity media and “We Have A Home” on his recent label.
