June 1 – Proverbs 1

Sharing Shrewdness

It’s June 1, so why not read chapter 1 in Proverbs today!

Proverbs is the primary ‘Wisdom’ Book of the Bible. In fact, verse 4 of chapter 1 is a good summary verse for why Proverbs is written: “for teaching shrewdness to the inexperienced, knowledge and discretion to a young man.”

The writer, Solomon, is looking to invest into the next generation of men who may be intelligent but do not yet have the advantage of experience. You learn ‘shrewdness’ and ‘discretion’ from experience. This is often from failure – OR – from another man who has failed.

Shrewdness – the quality of discernment and awareness; common sense.

Discretion – the quality of behaving or speaking in such a way as to avoid causing offense.

Has your experience taught you a level of discretion and shrewdness? Whether through success or failure, you likely know more than the ‘inexperienced’ younger man. Are you available to share what you have learned and how you learned it? Men who are willing to be honest, open, transparent and vulnerable can be mightily used by God.
