I Corinthians 9:25
“Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.”
The Corinthians were well known for their athletic games and the winner would receive a ‘crown’. This was a beautiful pine wreath that was placed on the head of the winner.
This was a great honor but this ‘crown’ would literally fade away. It would not last. This is similar to Matthew 6 where Jesus describes treasures on earth and how moth and rust would eventually destroy them.
A crown that lasts forever is like treasures in heaven. This crown has eternal value and is not temporary.
When writing to the Corinthians, Paul exhorted them in verse eighteen of chapter four;
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
We each have a daily choice where we will fix our eyes.
What is temporary and is distracting you from fully following Christ?
